Social workers serve in schools, hospitals, non-profit organizations, think tanks and the government. They come from every background, address different populations and cultures and serve in various capacities – from therapists to policymakers. In such a versatile field, social workers may have more differences than similarities, but there is a bottom line: what good social workers have in common is a strong desire to help people, an open mind to understand the issues as seen from their clients’ perspectives, how to work with each person collaboratively and effectively and a strong grasp of the immense value but also the limitations of their work. A recent New York Nonprofit Press article, The Role of Intimacy on the Road to Recovery, written by our own David Kamnitzer and Brian Mundy, addresses what for many clients -- as well as for their therapists -- is a sensitive issue…intimacy.
In addition to identifying overarching concepts about intimacy based on a series of consumer focus groups, the authors share a new ICL curriculum: Sexuality, Sensuality and Sensibility. Used initially in a small skills development and support group, the approach helps residents to cultivate healthy intimate relationships, which in turn, counters the sense of isolation that many people on the road to recovery encounter.

Seven artists came up, one by one, to stand near their just-debuted six-paneled wood mural and take a turn at the podium to share their love of art and their feelings about the day. “I’m going to show my family and put it on the wall!” exclaimed Karen S. about her certificate she received from Office of People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) Commissioner Courtney Burke. The next artist cried as she spoke and another joyously proclaimed, “I can do it!” |

Before last January, Lucian A. Sperta had never published a book. One year later, he has six published books, four of which have hit Amazon’s top 100 list of hot new releases in poetry and one, Yesterday’s Rain, just reached #17.
Through a poetic narrative, Lucian, an Intensive Case Manager for ICL’s Blended Case Management program and a credentialed alcohol and substance abuse counselor-in-training, shares his personal journey towards healing and recovery. He had no choice but to publish them. “It was time. My mind had become a storage place and so did my apt since there were 275 poems strewn all over the place. I feel like I am an empty internal book shelf; it was a cathartic process tempered by self-consciousness because of all the personal issues I shared.”
Each of Lucian’s books of poetry feature covers designed by Diana Little, ICL PROS vocational supervisor, and former ICLer, Rubin Gilbert.
Lucian hopes that his work will help others. “In my job, I work with a lot of survivors of sexual abuse, as I am. Their struggles have made me more appreciative of where I came from and where I am today. While the process has been difficult for me, I needed to let out the words and feelings that had accumulated in my head.”
His first royalty check will be “paid forward entirely to an organization to feed the children. They are always the victims of war, poverty, rape and molestation. They are the helpless ones.” More...

Our seven TEAM ICL runners did us proud on November 7th. Fueled by the desire to help others, the members of TEAM ICL trained for months, pushed passed personal hurdles and gave us all something to cheer for during the 2010 ING NYC Marathon. They ran on behalf of ICL and the over 9,000 individuals we serve. On behalf of everyone at ICL, we would like to express our appreciation, admiration and pride—just in case they couldn't hear it from the sidelines that day. More...

ICL provides mental health care, supportive services and service-enriched housing to Brooklyn families in need and their children. Preserving and strengthening families is a bedrock goal of ICL and its network of services. ICL's Holiday Giving Tree for the Child & Family Services Division has a goal of one present for each child served in our programs. ICL staff will purchase and wrap the gifts that come in through online donations. These gifts mean the world to our children and will brighten the holidays for them and their families. Donate today.

An Outsider Art Exhibition August 6-September 3, 2010
For Ahomeka Southerland, art is more than just a pastime. After his mother died when he was only four years old and being raised by his father within a 16-person household, Mr. Southerland turned to art for expression and comfort. Now, 45 years later, he still does. His lifelong dedication to and reverence for art is evident in his recent exhibition, THE INSPIRED WORLD OF AHOMEKA SOUTHERLAND. The exhibit is being held at the Van Der Plas Gallery at 89 South Street, Pier 17 in Manhattan and will run through through Sept 3rd. More...
