ICL Recognizes LaGuardia College Nursing Externs
|
On August 11, nurses from LaGuardia College completed the ICL Summer Externship Program under the supervision of Marcia Titus-Prescott, RNC, ICL’s Associate Director of Nursing MH Division/Integrated Health.
Each nurse was placed in one or multiple ICL program sites. During the six-week program, the nursing externs identified the challenges of program staff in meeting the healthcare needs of consumers with mental illnesses living in the community and examined the rehabilitation nurse’s role as an educator in promoting health and/or preventing/postponing medical co-morbidities.
The externs were awarded certificates of participation at the end of the program. Here are a few words from the externs themselves:
“As a whole, the experience at ICL’s Milestone residency was just that, a “milestone”, a turning point, in my pursuit of a nursing career. This externship has given me the insight of having patience and realizing that psychiatric consumers, with the right team effort and motivation, can achieve the goal of independence. It is also apparent even more to me now, that the stigma attached to people diagnosed with mental illnesses, can slowly be eradicated by teaching the staff and the community about this particular population. The lesser the stigma, the better help can be provided. ICL’s services have impacted many people’s lives and I can only provide a magnitude of gratification for the opportunity of having me as their extern.”
- Rizziene Sedayao, Nurse Extern at ICL Milestone Residence
“Working at ICL with Cynthia [Williams-Fraser] was a life changing experience because she showed me a different point of view of the meaning mental illness and the impact of it to the patients. Many people think that mental illness is a separate from any other illness but it’s not, ICL consider the patients as a whole.”
- Paula Cheverra, Nurse Extern at ICL HealthCare Choices, Tillary Street Women’s Shelter and ICL Lawton Residence
“My experience at ICL is quite different from the experience at the hospital. From what I learned from the externship, communication skills and interpersonal skills are very important besides nursing knowledge and skills. Utilizing motivational interviewing skills to interact with consumers promotes more positive results. This experience will help me use a better strategy to deal with people with mental illness in the future.”
- Ying Wang, Nurse Extern at ICL HealthCare Choices and ICL Lewis Avenue Residence
“The experience was very educational for me. It was very interesting to learn that the patients could live at the treatment center and participate in the community life outside. It was also interesting to learn about the functions of the registered nurse who worked there.”
- Mariusz Mieszawski, Nurse Extern at ICL Halsey House and ICL Lewis Avenue Residence
